Students with children

Students receive a discount on day care for their children, both with childminders and nursery schools.

Maternity/paternity leave

  • On the birth of a child, students are entitled to a maternity/paternity allowance, i.e. payments from the Maternity/paternity Leave Fund.
  • Each parent is personally entitled to a maternity/paternity allowance for three months. In addition, parents are entitled to three additional months that they can dispose of as they wish.
  • Applications must be submitted to the Maternity/paternity Leave Fund not later than three weeks before the anticipated birth of the child.

Child benefits

  • Child benefits are intended to assist parents with their children and to equalise their situations. A certain amount is paid out to parents for each child until the child reaches 18 years of age.

Children's day care

  • Students are entitled to a discount on day care and nursery school fees for their children. A certificate indicating they are engaged in full-time studies must be submitted. Further information on price lists and discounts, together with application forms, can be obtained from the websites of nursery schools and from childminders.
  • Students who have legal residence in one municipality and intend to study in another may be granted an exemption and can apply for a nursery school placement and childminder placement. A certificate indicating they are engaged in full-time studies must be submitted, along with confirmation of their home municipality.
  • The Icelandic Student Services (Félagsstofnun stúdenta) runs a number of nursery schools for students attending the University of Iceland. Parents studying at the Iceland Academy of the Arts (Listaháskóli Íslands), Reykjavík University or the University of Akureyri can also contact the appropriate local authorities for nursery school placements. Local authorities operate nursery schools at three universities in rural areas, i.e. the Hólar University College (Háskólinn á Hólum), the Agricultural University of Iceland (Landbúnaðarháskólinn á Hvanneyri) and the Bifröst University (Háskólinn á Bifröst).
