Application for extended death benefits

In certain circumstances, the surviving spouse may be entitled to extended death benefits.

Extended death benefits can be applied for if the financial and social situation of the surviving spouse is very poor.

You can apply for extended payments of death benefits for a maximum of 48 months total from the end of the payment of the 6 month death benefits.

Extended benefits are granted for 12 months at a time.

Supporting data

The application must be accompanied by:

  • statement of assets, liabilities and other financial obligations of the applicant;

  • documents supporting the statement, such as copies of the monthly payment burden accounts;

  • information on social conditions, if applicable;

  • if the applicant is not a pensioner with the TR, a copy of the latest tax return must be submitted.

Amount

Extended death benefits (12 to 36 months) are:

  • 68.736 ISKper month.

  • 824.832 ISKper year.

The processing time for applications for extended death benefits is up to 4 - 6 weeks.

If you disagree with the decision, you can:

Payments cancelled

If the widow/widower:

  • reaches 67 years of age,

  • leaves the country,

  • marries,

  • starts cohabitating with a partner, in that case the benefits are cancelled a year later.
